How do Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles Work?
Gas and Electric
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles combine the traditional gasoline engine with an electric motor and a high-capacity rechargeable battery. This enables the vehicle to operate on electric power alone, gasoline, or a blend of both, offering an emission free option for city driving and the convenience of gasoline engine for longer trips. The hybrid system automatically transitions to gas power as needed, while part of the battery is reserved for recharging through regenerative braking.
Regenerative Braking
Regenerative braking allows for the battery to be charged while driving. As you tap the brakes of your hybrid vehicle, the motor slows down and redirects that energy back into the battery, charging it while you are driving. The braking system moves the energy to the conventional braking system, while also allocating some to the energy regeneration of the battery. In addition to keeping your battery charged while driving, regenerative braking reduces typical brake wear.
