AMG® transmissions optimize gear changes for maximum performance and are tailored specifically to the respective engines and suited for every AMG® model, certain to impress even the most ambitious drivers. All of AMG®’s transmissions run on enhanced software, SPEEDSHIFT, and its characteristics vary substantially according to the selected drive program (DYNAMIC SELECT®). Most are fitted with multiple drive modes: (❄️) Slippery, (E) Eco, (C) Comfort, (S) Sport, (S+) Sport+, (R) Race, and (I) Individual. Manual Mode allows manual shifting via the shift paddles on the steering wheel for a sportier driving style. On some models, the available RACE START® function facilitates maximum acceleration from a stop as quickly as possible by managing throttle and torque to minimize wheel spin and ensure optimum traction of the wheels.
The dual clutch transaxle transmission is a manual transmission with 2 sets of gears, each with their own clutch disc, which is transversely mounted to the engine at the front of the car. This lightweight transmission offers extremely fast, computer-controlled shifts that can occur in less than 100 milliseconds with great fuel-efficiency.
It is fitted with four driving modes: Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Manual with a Race Start function.
The 7-speed transmission is in the 35 variants of the A-Class Sedan and the CLA Coupe while the 8-speed transmission is in the GLA 35 SUV, GLB 35 SUV, CLA 45 Coupe, and GLA 45 SUV.
The multi-clutch technology transmission allows for split second gear shift changes as well as quick multiple downshifts where required. Similar in design to the conventional automatic transmission, it utilizes multiple disc wet clutches for immediate response instead of a fluid driven torque converter to provide a direct connection between engine and transmission. It combines the comfort and smoothness of an automatic transmission with the sportiness and speed of a manual transmission.
It is fitted with four driving modes: Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Manual as well as Race Start.
With the exception of the GLE 63 (SUV, Coupe), GLS 63 SUV, and the G 63 SUV, this transmission is in all other 63 models, such as in the C-class (Sedan, Coupe, Cabriolet), E-class (Sedan, Wagon), S-class (Coupe, Cabriolet), GLC (SUV, Coupe) and the GT 4-Door Coupe.
The torque converter transmission offers multiple gear ratios to manage best available torque. It utilizes AMG® enhanced software to deliver extremely quick and imperceptible shifts. The transmission offers an ideal blend of smooth, efficient performance in virtually every driving situation, from relaxed cruising to quick acceleration.
It is fitted with four driving modes: Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Manual.
This transmission is in 43 variants of the C-class (Sedan, Coupe, Cabriolet), GLC (SUV, Coupe), and the GT 4-Door Coupe. This transmission is also in the 53 variants of the E-class (Sedan, Coupe, Cabriolet), CLS Coupe, GLE (SUV, Coupe) and the GT 4-Door Coupe. The GLE 63 (SUV, Coupe), GLS 63 SUV and G 63 SUV are the only 63 models that have this transmission.
The dual clutch transmission is rear mounted and combines the transmission and differential in a single unit at the rear axle. This rear of car location helps achieve optimal (47% in the front, 53% in the rear) weight distribution for better balance and handling.
The three pre-installed drive programs are Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and a customizable program, Individual, while the high-end models of the GT (GT S, GT C, and GT R) include RACE, which is intended for the race track.
This transmission is in all the GT’s Coupes and Roadsters (GT, GT C, GT S, GT R, GT Black Series).
The V8 front mid-engine is connected to the DCT through a torque tube, providing mutual resistance to bending and torque. Inside this torque tube, rotates an extremely light and resistant carbon-fiber driveshaft that spins at the same speed as the engine. The GTR utilizes a carbon fiber torque tube for even greater rigidity. This configuration provides ride comfort and stability.
The transmission is a traditional locked up torque converter transmission that is perfectly capable of handling the substantial power of some older 63 series and 65 series by reducing slippage and enhancing acceleration. It doesn’t offer the fast manual shifting of the MCT or DCT but this proven-tough transmission is well suited to the rigors of off-roading and the torque of 8 and 12 cylinder engines.
It is capable of switching between three driving modes: Comfort, Sport, and Manual.
This transmission is in the older 63 models of the C-class, E-class, S-class, GLS, GL, G-class, as well as in the older 65 models of the SL, G-class, and S-class.
