AMG® Technologies: Braking Systems

Efficient and effective braking capability is essential in high performance driving. Mercedes-AMG®’s robust, high performance braking systems are designed and built in conjunction with Brembo to the exact specifications and tolerances required by AMG® for maximum stopping power and fade resistance. There are three different high performance braking systems found in AMG® models.

  • AMG® High Performance Braking System

    AMG® High Performance Braking System

The AMG® high-performance braking system is the standard specification on 35, 45, 43, and 53 series models.

Perforated with steel inner rings (hats), these large steel brake rotors allow for short braking distances.

This system is complemented with silver painted calipers.

  • AMG® high performance composite braking system

AMG® High Performance Composite Braking System

The AMG® high-performance composite braking system is the standard specification on most 63 series and GT series models.

It has ventilated, slotted, and perforated steel brake rotors with aluminum hats which allows better heat dissipation. Composite technology increases fade resistance and reduces weight for exceptional braking power and feel. The weight reduction lowers the unsprung mass at each corner of the vehicle which improves the response of the spring and damping elements of the suspension.

This system is usually finished with red painted calipers.

  • AMG® high performance ceramic composite braking system

AMG® High Performance Ceramic Composite Braking System

Similar to what’s found in AMG® F1 race cars, the AMG® high performance ceramic composite braking system is an available option on many 63 series and GT series.

The hat is also made of aluminum but the two-piece brake rotors are made up of carbon-ceramic compound, which are 40 percent lighter than composite brake motors, reducing unsprung mass even further. Additional advantages include the ability to be less susceptible to brake fade and are excellent at dissipating heat while being extremely durable and highly resistant to wear and corrosion.

This system is adorned with bronze 6-piston painted calipers.
